The Point of Life?

Think about that title for a moment?  Does it invoke thoughts to stir around in your mind?  What is the point of life, anyway?

When I sat down to pen these thoughts, I started to review my life.  I thougth about life as  a small child, a simple life in a coal camp.  I didn’t have any cares, problems or concerns.  Then came the teenage years when life seemed so full of hope, promise, and excitement.  There were new discoveries all around me but I had little concern for the important things in life.  The early years of adulthood brought a job, marriage, and children. Life began to take on a new meaning, a meaning I thought I understood just fine.  I thought I was the captain of my own ship, plotting my own course through the cares of this life.  Somewhere in time though, something went wrong.  The plans that I had made didn’t happen.  Just when I thought I had all the answers to life’s questions, it seems the questions had all changed!

Sometimes life can deal us a bad hand.  Sometimes bad things happen to good people, sometimes we make bad decisions which have led us to where we are in life today and we sometimes ask ourselves these questions:

  • What is the Point of Life? Why am I in this world? Does my life have a purpose?  Where do I go from here?

These are questions that everyone needs to ask themselves.  There is much confusion in the lives of people today, but God is not the author of confusion.  He would have all men to come to the knowledge of the truth.  What is the truth, you may ask?  God’s Word is truth (John 17:17).  And the truth is God and only God can answer the questions above.  God has not left us clueless in life, He has given us an instruction manual to follow, The Bible.  In it, we discover fascinating answers to all life’s questions.  The easiest way to discover the purpose or meaning of a creation is to ask the one who created it, right?  The same is true in answering all life’s questions, ask God!

The Bible says in Colossians 1:16, “For through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth…Everything was created through him and for him.”  As we see from this verse, God is the starting point  and the source of our lives.  To discover the point of life and your purpose in it, you must turn to God’s Word, not the world’s wisdom.  You must build your life on eternal truths, not current fads, or any other programs that man has come up with that leave God out.

Psalm 139:16 says, “You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”   Also, Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans that I have for you” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

So by looking into God’s Word, we can see that everyday of our life was recorded before we were born and God has a plan for us.  God wants to love you.  You are special to God.  We discover how special when we make God the central point of our lives.

It’s all about Him.  Without God, life has no true point, no real meaning, or no eternal hope.   Without eternal hope, we only have what this world has to offer and that’s temporary at best.   You will tend to make choices based on circumstances, pressures, and emotions of the moment.  Without eternal hope you will keep changing directions, jobs, relationships, churches, etc. and hoping each change will complete you or fill the emptiness in your heart.  You think that maybe this time will be different but it never is and it doesn’t solve your real problem–no diffinite point in your life.

To truly know the point of our lives, we must first know God’s will for our lives.  2 Peter 3:9 says, “He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.”  2 Corinthians 6:2 says, “…Indeed, the “right time” is now.  Today is the day of salvation.”   So we must make an important decision, today, to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.  If you will follow this simple “Road Map to Heaven”, you can get some real answers to all your important questions.
